About My Research

My research involves trying to see wheather or not there is a differnce in how teenagers (aged from 13 to 19) perceive animal experimentation and animal rights throught the use of a questionnaire (Wuench, 1998). The questionnaire is composed of 28 statments to which a participant strongly agrees to, agrees to, no opinion, disagrees to, or strongly disagrees to. The questionnaire covers different areas of animal rights including animal experimentation, vegetarianism, wearing fur, etc.

Past researchers have found that animal rights have been associated with pet ownership, sex, age, religious affiliation, major in school, sex role orientation, political conservatism, vegetarianism, apathy towards animals, and attitudes about the environment, the military, and science (Broida et al. , 1993; Driscoll, 1992; Gallup & Beckstead, 1998).

When asked about what factors were important when making judgments about the acceptability of proposed research projects students in psychology mentioned the benefit and the cost of the research, the type of animal used (human-like or not, pet, etc.), the validity of the proposed research, and the availability of alternative procedures (Galvin & Herzog, 1992b).

Several researches have found than women are more ethical than men.(Broida, Tingley, Kimball, & Miele, 1993; Driscoll, 1992; Gallup & Beckstead,1988; Galvin & Herzog, 1992a,1992b; Herzog, Betchard & Pittman, 1991;Plous, 1991, 1996a, 1996b). The number has been found to be 2.5. Women are 2.5 times more likely to advocate animal rights and go against animal experimentation than men.

I am currently on the data collection process. I need at least 393 participants from each ethnic group (there are 6 ethic groups) which means I need about 2500 participants. I am also working on some perliminary data that I have now. I will use that data to enter the 2001 New York City Expo this year which is held at City College. Also last year I won third place from the Humane Education Committee for my proposal of this project.
